They are 13 million strong, and their numbers grow annually. Taken together, volunteers contribute over 2 billion hours every year to enrich the communities in which we live.
As we mark National Volunteer Week (April 23 to 29), we are reminded of the invaluable contribution of time, talent, energy, and skills that volunteers make every single day in communities across our region.
For Nourish, volunteers represent a critical ingredient in our success. In gardens, kitchens, and other gathering spaces in the sites we serve, the dedicated work of volunteers animates our efforts to develop a dynamic local network of places for food dedicated to community, health and fairness.
Last year alone, Nourish volunteers contributed hundreds of hours to grassroots initiatives designed to promote access to healthy food, food skills, and civic engagement. Through this vital infusion of support, we were able to expand our impact while addressing the root causes of hunger and food insecurity locally.
As our 2015-2016 annual report reveals, we helped community gardeners produce over 140,000 pounds of local food, distributed over 4000 JustFood boxes, served nearly 500 healthy meals and snacks, and delivered over 50 food skills workshops that taught participants to grow and cook their own food. Reflecting upon these accomplishments, we know that none of this would have been possible without the support of volunteers.
Moving forward to the present, 2017 represents a turning point for Nourish, and we need your support now more than ever. Thanks to a 3-year Grow Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we are scaling up our efforts to promote good food for all.
To assist us in meeting our expansion and long-term sustainability goals, we are currently recruiting new volunteers in Peterborough, Curve Lake First Nation, Havelock, and Lakefield. By volunteering with us in these communities, you will be working towards a future where no one has to worry about the source of their next meal.
